If you have spent any time marketing on the web Alexa will be a familiar name to you. Alexa.com is a web information provider that measures the popularity of websites that are visited by surfers who have an Alexa toolbar installed in their browser.
Alexa was bought by Amazon.com back in 1999. Since then over 10 million people have used the Alexa toolbar, which is free to download and install from Alexa.com.

To find the traffic rank of any site, Alexa aggregates the last three months of traffic data from its toolbar users and also from other undisclosed "diverse traffic data sources". The figure is also based on the number of page views and the "reach" (number of users) of any given website on a daily basis.
The accuracy of Alexa's methodology is open to question, but because of the sheer number of people who use the toolbar when they surf, the traffic Alexa measures is considerable and the Alexa web site still provides one of the best estimations of overall website ranking.

Moreover, the ranking that Alexa as signs to a website tends to be more accurate at the higher levels.
No matter how accurate or inaccurate Alexa may be, it continues to offer a quick guide to website ranking and is used by many Internet surfers as a quick way to gauge the reliability or popularity of a website. The more highly ranked website is the more likely it is to be trusted as a reliable provider of goods or services.
It is therefore in the interest of Webmasters to learn how to get their sites as highly ranked as possible. So let's have a look at some ways of improving your Alexa website ranking.
1. Go to Alexa.com and install the Alexa toolbar using Firefox's Search Status extension. Set your website homepage as the default page when the browser opens.
2. Add the Alexa widget to your website. The widget will display your Alexa rank, and it will also keep Alexa updated about your website "reach" and page views.
3. Customize the Alexa tool bar and add a link to the toolbar download page. Every time it is downloaded you will get some credit from Alexa and you will also earn Amazon commissions every time a user buys something on Amazon.
4. If you have a Wordpress blog there is a plug-in for Alexa Ranking that is available for you to use.
5. Submit your site to web directories either manually or 
use a professional directory submission service. Webmasters who visit web directories often have the Alexa bar installed, so if they click your link it will help your Alexa traffic rank.
6. Join several Internet marketing and SEO forums where a lot of the webmasters will use the Alexa toolbar. Add a link to your website in your signature file and you will get credit with our Alexa when people with the Toolbar installed click through.
7. Many of Alexa's top 100,000 websites are based in Asia and Australia so it is likely that a lot of those website owners will have the Alexa toolbar installed. You will stand a good chance of improving your ranking if you join social networking sites that are popular in those regions.
Social networking sites such as Orkut.com and Hi5.com are worth checking out. Orkut is owned by Google and is popular in India, while Hi5 is currently in Alexa's top 20 websites.
8. Write articles about Alexa ranking and free SEO tips. Post them on your website or blog so as to attract people to your site who may be interested in downloading the Alexa toolbar, or who already have it and want to find out more about our Alexa.
9. Make a free resources page for your website to attract website owners. Include a link to your Alexa toolbar download page.
10. Stumbleupon and other bookmarking sites are good places to get publicity whenever you post a new article on your website or blog. To avoid being accused of spamming, organise reciprocal campaigns with other Webmasters for better results.
These are just some of the ways that you can improve your Alexa ranking. Remember, the higher your website ranks on Alexa the more seriously it is likely to be taken by people who visit your site and by people who might want to advertise on it. A high ranking website can also command higher advertising fees.
