In this month’s edition of Wired Magazine, Brad Pitt graced the cover of the publication to promote his new movie and provide social etiquette advice for the digital age. One half of Hollywood’s Ultimate Super Couple, Pitt decided to shoot his mouth off about everything from online dating profiles to chatting vs. texting while at the urinal. While the online dating industry has certainly never had a better looking “relationship advisor,” Brad Pitt should have kept his comments to himself and left the online dating advice to the experts.

The reporter asked Pitt the following: if a person embellished his or her salary on an online dating profile should he/she confess? “Hell no,” Pitt writes. “Everyone lies online. In fact, readers expect you to lie. If you don’t, they’ll think you make less than you actually do. So the only way to tell the truth is to lie.”

Thank you, Brad Pitt, for reinforcing a negative stereotype that people who work in the online dating industry spend almost every day trying to combat. Any and all serious online daters know that lying in your profile is a big online dating no-no. It’s one thing to embellish in your profile about the number of times you go to the gym, the amount of sushi you can consume, or your knowledge about baseball statistics, but it’s dating suicide to lie in your online dating profile about your salary, appearance, current relationship and family status.

For example, if you write in your online dating profile that you run a successful hedge fund when you’re really the janitor at a hedge fund, your date with know when you can’t afford to pick up the tab at the expensive restaurant she suggested you take her to (because she thought you were rolling in dough). Unless you don’t ever expect to go out on an actual date, don’t write in your online dating profile that you’re three dress sizes smaller than you actually are, your date won’t even hang around to watch you finish your first cocktail. If you’re still technically married, even though you know for certain that things definitely won’t work out, click the box in your online dating profile that says separated and not single. And, if your family life means that you have custody every third weekend and on alternate holidays, make sure you write in your online dating profile that you have children. That’s one surprise no one wants to have on a third or fourth date, especially when you show up on the date with three kids in tow because it’s your Sunday.

But why is Brad Pitt give online dating advice anyway? He certainly doesn’t admit to ever using an online dating site or filling out an online dating profile. We know that online dating sites, such as industry leader Date.com, are teeming with women who profess to ‘have a striking resemblance to Angelina Jolie,’ but I’m pretty sure Pitt didn’t meet Jolie in an online dating chat room. With his obvious lack of experience with online dating, it’s no wonder he gave such poor advice. Besides, if history serves, Pitt certainly shouldn’t be giving relationship advice to the masses. (Pitt’s impressive roster of ex’s include Jill Schoelen, Robin Givens, Juliette Lewis, Jitka Pohlodek, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Aniston.)

And so, to all you avid online daters: if you’re really not that interested in attracting someone with a decent character, go ahead and lie in your online dating profile. We certainly can’t stop you. But, when it comes to dating and relationships, trust is an essential element in making things work. Don’t start things off on the wrong foot; be candid in your online dating profile. Abe was right: honesty is the best policy. We know you’ll thank us when you’re in an honest and loving relationship that started off on the right foot with a truthful online dating profile.

As for Mr. Pitt, we think you are a very talented actor, an extremely handsome man, and a very loving Father. But to the millions of single men and women who are utilizing online dating websites to find a date, relationship and their soul mate, your pearls of wisdom were not appreciated. In the future, please fight the urge to dispense online dating advice, and stick to what you know how to do best.
